After initial contact and once a quote is agreed upon, arrangements will be made to conduct the survey at or on a specific date and time via the Marine Surveying Agreement.
For a pre-purchase survey, it is recommended that the client, broker, and owner/owner's representative be present. Prior to the execution of the marine survey, the buyer will get written permission from the owner to board his vessel for the marine survey. Additionally, if a limited trial run is to be performed, the owner must have a representative (i.e. broker) or qualified Captain to operate the vessel during the limited trial run. It is the responsibility of the client to make arrangements with the marina and vessel owner to haul out the vessel for an out-of-water inspection to check the running gear and hull (it is recommended that the hull be pressure washed prior to the out-of-water inspection to remove marine overgrowth) that typically sits below the waterline. The client will be responsible for the haul out expense unless previous arrangements are made.
Additionally, the client and owner will ensure that the vessel is clean with covers removed and lockers are clear of disorganized equipment. All unnecessary gear and personal items that are not intended to be sold with the vessel should be removed. The fuel tank should have adequate fuel levels and batteries should be fully charged to allow all systems on the DC-side to be tested. If the vessel is capable of AC power, please ensure the vessel has access to shore power (with the appropriate power cord) to test all AC electrical components. Freshwater tanks should have an adequate amount of water to test water systems in the galley or head. Safety gear is also a must and should be present at the time of the marine survey. If no safety gear is present, this could impact the completion of the limited trial run. Lastly, do not start engines prior to the start of the survey.
Ideally, the owner will have previous marine surveys and maintenance records at time of inspection. State Registration and documentation is required for the limited trial run.

The length of time needed to conduct the survey will depend upon the type of survey and the size/condition of the vessel.
The survey routine for a boat already in the water is as follows:
- Inspection at the dock with engines cold.
- Limited Trial Run to pre-coordinated marina for haul out inspection to see running gear and hull that typically sits below the waterline (at clients expense).
- Launch the vessel and return to the dock.
- Any further inspections needed will be completed at the dock.
The survey routine for a boat already on a trailer or boat lift is as follows:
- Meet at the boat ramp or boat lift and keep the boat out of the water and dry for inspection of the running gear and hull that typically sits below the waterline.
- Launch the boat to begin Limited Trial Run.
- Inspection during Limited Trial Run.
- Any further inspections needed will be completed at the boat ramp or boat lift.
During the inspection, the Marine Surveyor will follow and inspect the vessel to all mandatory standards promulgated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), under the authority of Title 46 United States Code (USC); Title 33 and Title 46 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and the voluntary standards and recommend practices developed by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
The Marine Surveyor uses the InspectX Marine Surveying software to create and generate an organized and easy to read professional report.
An emailed survey report is provided to the client usually within three (3) business days. This report can then be used to make educated decisions on purchasing, selling, insuring, or financing your boat in a timely manner.
The report will contain a comprehensive description of the vessel and installed equipment and will include “Findings and Recommendations” required for correction to reasonably ensure the vessel is fit for its intended service. The report will include a statement of the “Fair Market Value and Replacement Cost” of the vessel and will be submitted in good faith, without prejudice, and will constitute a description of the condition of the vessel at the time of survey. Minor cosmetic defects not materially affecting value may not be addressed. The Marine Survey report will be issued for the exclusive use of the Client and may contain information that is privileged, confidential, and exempt from disclosure under applicable law.
If requested, fluid analysis sample results will be sent usually within three (3) business days.
The cost of a marine survey varies with the type of boat, size, age, and location of the vessel, as well as the type of survey requested. Investing in a professional marine survey can potentially save the client a much larger repair or maintenance cost later on and can lead to the reduction of purchase price with any identified deficiencies noted during the inspection.
Complimentary quotes will be provided to clients upon request.
There will be an additional charge for a second trip to the vessel (if requested), for fluid analysis, and for travel beyond 50-miles of St. Augustine, FL.
Acceptable forms of payment include:
- Cash
- All major Credit Cards accepted via Square
Full payment is required the day of the survey. If survey is not canceled three (3) working days prior to the day of the survey, the entire survey fee will be due and payable.
A 3% service fee will be added to all invoices paid with a credit card.
